Chambered Nautilus Shell
Captionchambered nautilus shell or Emperor nautilus shell, Nautilus pompilius, or the largest nautilus species, giant nautilus shell, Nautilus repertus. The living animal occupies the outer shell chamber. A tissue-lined tube of shell, the siphuncle, connects the body to older chambers. Gas in the sealed chambers balances the animal's growth, providing neutral buoyancy.
